Welcome!

Thank you for your interest in Five Points Psychiatry in Athens, GA. Dr. Steven Hines has been in private practice in this university town since 2006. His philosophy is to support his patients in making the most effective change in their lives possible. He attempts to use the least amount medication possible, gives brief, supportive psychotherapy and often refers out to psychologists, licensed clinical social workers, and other professional counselors for longer term psychotherapy. Dr. Hines empowers each patient to realize that they are the agent of change ultimately, however, and will encourage and challenge each person to actively improve their lives through multiple positive practices that engender a strong, resilient mental health. Dr. Hines considers it a privilege to assist and guide patients in achieving their best level of functioning possible. Collaboration is key.

Some important specifics to consider before contacting us is that Dr. Hines specializes in adult mood and anxiety disorders. Also, he currently does not treat patients with active substance use disorders, dementia, or head injuries. Anyone seeking treatment for Attention Deficit Disorder will need to be tested first by a licensed neuropsychologist before any medications will be prescribed. Five Points Psychiatry does not accept insurance, but many patients file with their insurance companies and receive out of network benefits; we are happy to provide necessary documentation. Frequency of follow-up for treatment is determined by Dr. Hines but is planned with input from the patient.

Five Points Psychiatry is conveniently located in the heart of Athens, close to the University of Georgia on Milledge Avenue.
